Bike Safety Checklist

Helmets are a must!* Keep your child smart - protect their brains.

Adjust your bike so it fits you.

  • have 1 to 2 inches between you and the top bar for a road bike; and 3 to 4 inches for a mountain bike

  • the seat should be level front to back

  • seat height should allow a slight bend at the knee when leg is fully extended

ABCs Quick Check before each ride.

  • Air - check that tire pressure matches PSI stated on tire wall.

  • Brakes - check that your brakes are working properly.

  • Chain/Clothing - check that your chain is lubricated and your clothing and shoe laces will not get entangled.

  • It is also important to check that your quick release levers are tight.

    • Quick Release - Make sure quick releases are closed and pointed to the back of bike so not to get caught on anything and accidentally get pulled open.

    • Check it Over - Take a quick ride around your driveway to check to make sure the entire bike is working correctly and smoothly.

* Although helmets are not required in Idaho, SR2S STRONGLY encourages ALL riders of ALL ages to wear helmets when riding bikes.

Be seen! Use reflective gear and wear bright clothing even during daylight hours.

Be heard! Use bell and/or voice.

Use hand signals and look before turning and changing lanes.

Stop at red lights and stop signs, cross traffic at intersections, and let pedestrians cross first.

Ride along the right side of the road in the direction of car traffic.

Ride with an adult until you have safe bike skills.

Kids under 10 should walk their bikes across intersections.

Limit distractions. No headphones and no texting while riding.

Lock up at bike racks.
