Our Community

Nestled into the base of the Selkirk Mountains in the North Idaho Panhandle region, Sandpoint, Idaho, is 60 miles south of the Canadian border. It sits on the shore of Lake Pend Oreille (pronounced Pon-da-ray), a spectacular glacial body of water 43 miles long that is a focal point of the area's natural beauty.

Settled in 1880, the area developed an economy that was dependent on timber and mining until the mid-20th century.  The community is now making a transition to tourism and a broader base of businesses.

The community is developing a national reputation as one of the country's most livable small cities. In 2004, Sunset magazine named Sandpoint the West's "best small town," National Geographic Adventure labeled it a "great adventure town," and Outside magazine list it among the 20 "dream towns."

Sandpoint offers residents and visitors easy access to fishing, hunting, hiking, mountain biking, camping, and wilderness experiences. Downhill and Nordic skiers, snowmobilers, and winter campers are attracted to the area. The nearby Schweitzer Mountain Resort offers some of the finest downhill skiing and snowboarding in the Northwest. During the summer, the picturesque 111-mile shoreline of Lake Pend Oreille offers swimming, boating, and other water-related activities. Fishermen are drawn to the lake in search of the giant Kamloops and Mackinaw trout.  Golfers of all ability levels can enjoy the challenges of several golf courses in the area.
