Bike to School Day

The first-ever National Bike to School Day took place on May 9, 2012, in coordination with the League of American Bicyclists' National Bike Month. Almost 1,000 local events in 49 states and the District of Columbia joined together to encourage children to safely bicycle or walk to school.

The event builds on the popularity of Walk to School Day, which is celebrated across the country – and the world – each October. Many communities and schools have been holding spring walk and bicycle to school events for years. National Bike to School Day provides an opportunity for schools across the country to join together to celebrate and to build off of the energy of National Bike Month.

Bike to School every day!

Hey Kids! Bike to School each day as the weather permits. Establish a park & ride location for your family.

Our most difficult Bike to School Day challenge in the Lake Pend Oreille School District is location, location, location! Of our seven elementary schools, only three are surrounded by neighborhoods: Washington, Farmin-Stidwell, and Kootenai Elementariness.

Our four rural schools (Northside, Hope, Sagle, and Southside Elementaries) are taking on the location challenge by offering Bike Safety Rodeos to their students as a way to participate in the biking celebration. It takes many reliable adult volunteers and a committed staff to make Bike to School Day and Bike Safety Rodeos successful. Please sign up to volunteer today!

Our top priority on Bike to School Day is safety. LPOSD strongly suggests that ALL student and ALL adult riders wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet. Adults need to lead by example by demonstrating safe riding skills. Safe riders wear helmets and obey the bike safety rules of the road. Please select a safe and age appropriate route for you and your child.

Maps are available for those who may wish to park and ride a shorter distance. Obtain permission to park your vehicle at the starting point you've selected. When mapping your route, know how long it takes for your child to travel, and what distance they are able to ride before your Bike to School Day departure. We don't want your children to be tardy...or exhausted when they arrive at school.

We suggest trial rides before the Bike to School Day event. Wear helmets and travel single-file on the right-hand edge of the roadway with the flow of traffic. Please display brightly colored clothing, a bike flag if you have one, and turn on your bike lights to be seen. Your family will be easier seen by drivers if you travel in a larger group, so meet up with other families to make it a group event.

HAVE FUN! RIDE SAFE!

P.S. Check directly with your school to learn details about your school's Bike to School Day celebration involvement.
