2023-24 Superintendent Messages

February 29, 2023

Hello LPOSD Families,

One of my favorite times of year is coming up on March 15 – we will be holding elementary school student-led conferences for grades K-6. Students have the opportunity to share details of their school day, academic and behavioral progress, and goals for the remainder of the school year. You will hear directly from them about what they love and what they believe are challenges. Please join us in continuing to make the student-led conferences a HUGE success and note the date on your calendar. ✏️ 🗓️

On the same day, Friday, March 15, staff at both Sandpoint Middle School and Clark Fork Jr-Sr High School will be training in preparation for student-led conferences next year; therefore, there will be a non-student day at both of these schools on 3/15 this year. The only students who will have school on Friday, March 15, 2024 are Sandpoint High and LPOHS.

What are the benefits of student-led conferences?

Hello LPOSD Families,

Welcome to the second semester! I want to begin by taking a moment to express my heartfelt appreciation for our dedicated teachers who recently finalized grades and provided valuable feedback to our students during our January 26 staff work day. We are truly blessed to have such a committed group of educators working in our district.

I am amazed at the growth of our students, who no longer look as young as they did when they first entered our doors back in September. It is heartwarming to think about the graduates whose hands I will get to shake in just one more semester. Learning is in full swing and students of all ages are reaching academic milestones this time of year!

As we step into the new semester, we eagerly anticipate reviewing our Semester 1 data. This is an opportunity for us to celebrate our successes and identify areas of growth, making necessary adjustments to ensure an even more successful academic journey for our students.

In order to see the progress we've made in the focus area of "Student Connection," I invite you to watch our first released segment of our 5 Year Strategic Plan video-series. This video about Student Connection highlights our efforts to connect with LPOSD students through intentional time, offering learning experiences they are drawn to, and providing opportunities for engagement both inside and outside of the classroom.

Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership, bwm

LPOSD Families and Community Members,

As we quickly approach the beginning of the holiday break, I wanted to take a moment to extend my warmest wishes to you and your family. I hope this two-week period is filled with joy, laughter, and special memories with loved ones that will be cherished for years to come. As we enjoy the holiday spirit, I encourage you to embrace the beauty of the outdoors. Whether it's a brisk winter walk, a day on the mountain, or simply enjoying a quiet hour in nature, spending time outdoors can be rejuvenating for the mind and soul.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the incredible efforts of our Facilities Department, and Director Matt Diel. Their swift response and talent were instrumental in the rapid resolution of recent repairs at Sandpoint Middle School (steam leak, followed by a broken water main, which then caused significant damage to the electrical in the gym). Due to their hard work, we were able to reopen the school doors after just two days of closure, ensuring minimal disruption for our students.

I would also like to highlight the ongoing work of the Long Range Facility Planning Committee. This week marked their third school tour, focusing on assessing the top facility needs at each school in our district. Their commitment to this comprehensive evaluation process will guide their recommendations to the Board, helping us address the district's facility needs in a thoughtful and strategic manner.

As I look back on the year 2023, serving as your Superintendent is one of the things I am most grateful for. I look forward to the continued success and collaboration in 2024! School resumes on January 8, and our staff will be thrilled to welcome back students & hear all about their holiday break!

With Much Gratitude, bwm

LPOSD Families and Community Members,

As we close out November, I just want to express my gratitude for our amazing students and families—you make our district a vibrant community, and serving you is a true privilege. I love both the longstanding history of multiple generations of families who have attended LPOSD schools, as well as the many new faces to our district. Another thing I have loved about November was witnessing the community gatherings at various LPOSD schools for our Veteran's Day programs. It is heartwarming to see our students and Veterans interact in meaningful ways. We love to show our appreciation for north Idaho's Veterans!

You may remember that facilities (improving school safety and addressing deficient building conditions) was identified as the #1 community priority in last year's survey. The Board-approved Long Range Facility Planning Committee had their third meeting earlier this week. The committee discussed funding options for capital projects and facility conditions. So far we've toured Northside and Sandpoint Middle School. This committee is made up of community members from each region of the district, who meet to better understand the current state of our facilities and seek to prioritize solutions to some of the challenges of our aging school infrastructure.

December is nearly here and snow is in the forecast! I hope that we can be mindful of the approaching winter weather. From a leadership point of view, I believe it's crucial to reduce the number of snow days so that learning can go on without interruptions and our school remains a safe and warm place for our most vulnerable students. As we prepare for the unique challenges our climate can present, let's continue to support one another through the winter months. You can find more information about school closures below.

Dear Families and Stakeholders,

On October 6th, we held districtwide professional development for all educators. This day provided a valuable opportunity for our dedicated teachers and staff to enhance their knowledge and skills by being the students themselves. Our professionals had a chance to fill their cups as learners, allowing them to grow and better serve our students. I am grateful for the commitment our educators showed during this day of learning.

Our recent Coffee Klatch, held earlier this month, allowed me the opportunity to speak with many parents. Together, we covered a range of subjects including weather-related closures, the purpose and work of the Long Range Facility Planning Committee, middle school wrestling's high participation rates, and a variety of perspectives about the AR Reading program. I greatly appreciate the insights and perspectives shared by parents 😀. Our next Coffee Klatch will be in February.

As we enter my favorite season of all, a month focused on giving thanks, I invite you to join me in cultivating a regular practice of gratitude. What are you most thankful for? Take a moment today to share out your gratitude!

With Much Gratitude for your continued support, bwm

Dear LPOSD Families,

The 2023-24 academic year is off to a great start! As I visited every classroom in our district, what struck me was the culture of care, compassion and connection. Our staff strive to foster strong relationships with our students to create a safe, supportive learning environment where everyone can thrive. To foster greater connection with students, our District is prioritizing the One Trusted Adult Initiative. We want every student to feel safe at school and, along with their parents, identify one staff member they can turn to in need. Ask your student: "Who is your trusted adult at school?"

I'd also like to express my gratitude to the community members who signed up for the Long Range Facility Planning Committee. We will be meeting for the first time in early October and commence the 18+ month process of assessing the current condition of our buildings, touring facilities, and prioritizing the district's needs. This step is critical to ensuring that our schools remain safe and up-to-date for our students – the primary desire expressed by stakeholders in our 5-Year Strategic Plan.

Thank you for your continuous support of Lake Pend Oreille School District. It is an honor to lead such an incredible district.

Dear LPOSD Families,

We are SO excited to welcome the students back to school next week! Our staff has been working hard to ensure a smooth transition and supportive learning environment for every student who walks through our doors on September 5th. I hope your family was able to have some fun together this summer exploring the amazing beauty in our area. I was blessed to get out into our mountains and enjoy several new trails this summer.

The priorities identified by our community in the stakeholder input process last year are captured in our finalized 5-Year Strategic Plan: Facilities, Student Connection, Quality Staff, and Community Connection. These focus areas will direct our work as we support student growth every day. We greatly value parent and community involvement, which requires excellent communication on our part. You can count on me to keep you informed on district progress throughout the year.

By working together, we can make 2023-24 full of growth for EVERY student, EVERY day

Much gratitude for sharing your kids with us 🙂, bwm

Dear LPOSD Families,

I hope this message finds you well and that your family is enjoying a wonderful summer break, filled with relaxation, adventures, and quality time with loved ones😍. As the new school year approaches, LPOSD would like to ensure every parent has access to the information needed for a successful start to the year. This edition of the Loop is provided as a resource for families preparing for the "Back to School" season.

Please join us for our annual open house events at LPOSD schools later this month. These gatherings provide an excellent opportunity for you to meet the teachers, learn about the curriculum, and actively participate in your child's education. It is also a good opportunity for students to familiarize themselves (or re-familiarize) with their school, and to drop off any donated school supplies.

By working together, I am confident we can make the 2023-24 school year a resounding success! Let's inspire our students to dream big, strive for excellence, and embrace the joy of learning. In the meantime...enjoy the remaining days of summer in this beautiful place we call home 🧡, bwm
