Early Childhood Child Find for Ages 3-5
What is Child Find?
Child Find is a federally required program that helps identify, locate, and evaluate young children who may have developmental delays or disabilities. This statewide effort serves children ages 3 through 5 and is available at no cost to families. Children develop at different rates, but concerns in areas such as speech and language, learning, motor skills, social-emotional development, hearing, vision, or behavior may indicate a need for additional support.
How does Child Find Work?
Parents, caregivers, educators, healthcare professionals, or community members may refer a child when there are concerns about developmental delays. After a referral is received, the district may conduct screenings and, with parent consent, complete a comprehensive evaluation to determine whether the child qualifies for Services for Exceptional Children (SEC).
If a child is found eligible, LPOSD works with the family to develop an individualized plan and provide appropriate services designed to support the child's growth, learning, and successful transition into school. Early identification and intervention can make a significant difference in helping children reach their full potential.

Student Child Find for Grades K-12
If your student is struggling and you have concerns, as a parent/guardian, you can request a Referral to Consider a Special Education Evaluation meeting under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). To initiate the process, you can submit a written request to your child’s school or the district’s special education department. Your request should include:
A statement of your concerns about your child's academic, behavioral, or developmental progress.
Any supporting information, such as examples of challenges your child is facing or past evaluations.
Once the request is made, the school or District Special Education Department must respond within a reasonable timeframe to obtain your consent for the evaluation.
